Stop calling Social Security an entitlement. Now.
I've been paying into Social Security my entire working life. Even as a kid working in California I paid into Social Security. It's not an entitlement. Dagnabit! Working people pay into it their entire lives. Now, do what has to be done to make it solvent - like stop dipping into the trust fund or using its assets to show a better deficit or whatever is being done. But, really, an entitlement is something you just "get." It's not something you earn.

If you have received benefits for longer than five years, you are receiving more than you put in.
ReplyDeleteA huge proportion of recipients are getting far more than they put in.
Collectively, you allowed every cent of what you put in to be spent immediately so that you could enjoy more benefits than you wanted to pay for. Trillions in debt are due to the collective decision made by all generations since 1934.
Tell me again how todays' benefits paid out were paid for by y'all.
Wow, just found this, and it's like 5-6 months old.
ReplyDeleteIt is the fact that you DID pay in - you might have EARNED this benefit, that is the reason SSI is called an entitlement. Because you paid in, you are ENTITLED to receive the benefit.
Most people think an entitlement program is the free stuff. Not so. Hope that helps.
